Florence Nightingale MuseumDiscover more about Florence Nightingale and how she became the founder of modern nursing, helping wounded and sick soldiers during the Crimean War.
She became one of our greatest Victorians and a female icon during her own lifetime. Find out how she became The Lady With The Lamp and see an actual lamp that she used! And meet Athena, her pet owl. Follow her life from well-to-do Victorian lady to a famous campaigner on health reform.
The Foundling Museum explores the history of the Foundling Hospital, the UK’s first children’s charity and first public art gallery.
Established in 1739 by philanthropist Thomas Coram, and continuing today as the children’s charity Coram, the Hospital was set up as an institution ‘for the maintenance and education of exposed and deserted young children’. Instrumental in helping Coram realise his vision was the artist William Hogarth, who encouraged leading artists of the day to donate work, and the composer George Frideric Handel, who gave annual benefit concerts of his Messiah. Through a dynamic programme of exhibitions and events, we celebrate their vision and the ways in which artists and children have inspired each other for over 275 years.
Discover the intriguing story behind this important London institution and the children who grew up there, alongside original period interiors, poignant artefacts and inspiring art.
Freud Museum London
**Closed Tuesday. Closed on Monday from 7 September**
Visit London's most intriguing historic house museum: the final home of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, who came here in 1938 after fleeing Nazi-occupied Vienna.
Here, among the book-lined shelves, is the original psychoanalytic couch on which Freud's patients told him their dreams. The house also contains Freud’s much loved collection of over 2,000 Classical and Oriental antiquities. The objects are arranged just as Freud left them, including on his desk, where he placed his favourite pieces. The house is also filled with memories of Freud’s daughter, Anna, a pioneer of child psychoanalysis.
House tours and exhibitions are free with admission.
Buy clever and unusual Freud inspired gifts in the museum shop.
