Weekend access changes at Nottingham station footbridge

From Friday 6th February, access from Nottingham station’s footbridge to the train platforms will be closed at weekends to help keep customers and staff safe.

Restricted access to platforms via the footbridge between 7pm and 6am each day will also continue to be in place.

What’s changing?
• From 7pm on Fridays until 6am on Mondays, customers won’t be able to enter the platforms from the footbridge, this is in addition to restricted access between 7pm and 6am each day.
• Access to platforms will be via the main station entrance and ticket gates during these times.

Why are we making this change?
Safety data from earlier restrictions shows clear improvements:
• 45% fewer assaults and incidents of abuse
• 38% fewer slips, trips and falls

Based on this evidence, extending the restrictions at weekends will help improve:
• Personal safety and security
• The overall station environment
• Protection against vandalism and fare evasion

Will the footbridge still be open?
Yes, the footbridge will remain a public right of way at all times, with access maintained between Station Street and Queen’s Road, including access to the tram network. Only access to the train platforms will be restricted.

During busy times or events
We can open the gates when needed, such as:
• Major events
• Periods of high crowding
• Emergencies
This ensures we can manage passenger flow safely when circumstances change.

Making it easier to get around
Following feedback from customers and local businesses, we’ve made several improvements:
• Clearer station signage
• Improved wayfinding
• Updated guidance for accessing nearby taxi ranks and local services

Is this about saving money?
Partly - the railway receives around £2 billion a year in taxpayer support. Taking action to minimise avoidable revenue loss helps protect public funding and strengthens the case to secure investment for future improvements.

Have Stakeholders been consulted?
EMR has worked closely with local stakeholders and taken on board customer and community feedback. Improvements have been made to signage, wayfinding, and guidance to access taxis and nearby businesses.

What is the overall goal?
Our goal remains to ensure that Nottingham Station is a safe, accessible, and pleasant environment for all users, while also reducing costs for taxpayers and fare-paying customers.

We’ll continue working closely with local partners to make sure these changes are managed smoothly and any impacts are kept to a minimum.

If you’re travelling at the weekend, please allow a little extra time and follow station signage or speak to a member of staff if you need help.
