The UK’s only operational railway roundhouse – a unique architectural and railway experience.
Steeped in Midland Railway history, Barrow Hill Roundhouse was built in 1870 to house the steam locomotives that served the nearby iron and coking works and surrounding coalfields. However, by the late 1980s these industries were in decline. On 9th February 1991 the Roundhouse closed its doors and 121 years of continuous operation ceased.
That would have been the end were it not for a dedicated group who persuaded the local Council to have the building listed to prevent its demolition. The Council purchased the site and leased it to the newly formed Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society charity. The Roundhouse reopened in 1997 and is now considered to be a historical and architectural gem – the only operational railway roundhouse in the UK.
The Roundhouse is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday between March and December. Regular weekend attractions include turntable and signal box demonstrations and the site’s volunteers working on various railway renovation projects. There are also displays interpreting the Roundhouse story, the history of the surrounding area and the impact of the railways, as well as interactive activities for visitors young and old. There is a Café – supplying filling breakfasts and delicious lunches – and Shop – selling railway-themed gifts and exclusive Barrow Hill mementos.
The Roundhouse has a large free car park and there is a regular bus service from Chesterfield town centre. The nearest railway station is Chesterfield. Most of the site is suitable for wheelchair users. The Roundhouse is also dog friendly.
The Roundhouse also holds special events which attracts thousands of visitors, including the renowned Rail Ale Festival, which takes place in May. The Festival has a dedicated website for more information: www.railalefestival.com .
