The History of London St Pancras Station

St Pancras station's revival began in the 1990s with the opening of the Channel Tunnel in May 1994. A high-speed line was authorised by the government in 1996 to connect the tunnel to a renovated St Pancras International station.

To restore the station to its original Victorian design, Barlow's original train shed roof was restored with 18,000 self-cleaning glass panes, 300,000 Welsh slates, and repainted iron girders. The main entrance doors were replaced, and the brass furniture was copied from the original drawings. The station's platforms were extended to accommodate Eurostar trains, and Foster & Partners designed an additional train shed. The west wall was rebuilt using 16 million bricks identical to the original. New public art includes a statue of John Betjeman and a 30ft bronze sculpture called 'The Meeting Place' under the station clock.

St Pancras International railway station is now a marvel of modern engineering, offering a seamless and speedy transportation experience to those travelling to and from London. Despite being a 19th century station, it boasts a range of state-of-the-art features that make it a true 21st century destination. The station was officially opened in November 2007 and was quick to become a hub for Eurostar and East Midland services. In December of the same year, Thameslink services also began operating from St Pancras International. By the end of 2009, high speed domestic services joined the mix, connecting St Pancras to Kent and other key destinations. In 2012, the high-speed line was used to transport spectators to the London Olympic Park at Stratford International in just seven minutes. Today, St Pancras International remains a key London interchange, owned by HS1 Limited and managed by Network Rail. With its mix of historic charm and modern amenities, it is truly a destination station that offers a glimpse into the past while propelling us towards the future.
