Getting there greener - Our commitment to sustainable development

Taking the train is 4 times less carbon intensive than traveling by car – while also improving air quality and city centre congestion. In many cases, traveling by train in the UK is the most sustainable option, and EMR have an important role to play in helping people live more sustainably. In doing so, we contribute to the Paris Agreement and make a significant contribution to achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

EMR’s vison is to put customers at the heart of our sustainable railway for the east midlands. Our sustainably agenda and aims are described best as simply “Getting There Greener”, an approach to green travel, growth, modal shift and sustainability which is focused on reducing emissions, creating social value and protecting and restoring the natural environment.

A major part of Getting There Greener is becoming a railway that’s central to delivering a net zero economy by 2050, and we have committed to achieve our part by 2045 – through a series of externally verified science-based targets .

Getting there greener

Science Based Target

Our pathway to net zero is challenging and subject to significant national infrastructure investment decisions unlocking zero emissions rail for the whole of the midlands mainline and wider into the regions we serve.

A major step towards this, is through the introduction of EMR's new Aurora electric diesel bimodal intercity train. Transforming and decarbonising train services from London to the Midlands and South Yorkshire, more capacity, seats and flexibly for passengers; a fundamental part and example delivering green economic growth.

Aside from traction carbon, our net zero approach targets reducing our total lifecycle carbon, including the operation of our building estate and all the vital activities required to keep passengers moving safely. Our focus on emissions, natural environment and social sustainability are now full integrated into EMR’s approach .

These focus areas, their strategic aims and defined industry common solutions are outlined below:
