Penistone Line Partnership CRP

This scenic line was the first community rail partnership formed in 2001, and a bustling community rail network has grown since those early grassroots.

The 1 hour and 16-minute journey from Sheffield city of steel, through Barnsley, to the textile town of Huddersfield passes through urban and rural landscapes with 10 viaducts. The obvious ones being Penistone, Denby Dale and Lockwood viaducts.

Castle Hill and Victoria Tower

Visit this prominent landmark by train embarking at Berry Brow station with a short uphill walk to Castle Hill. Why not follow our circular trail totalling 3 miles. Enjoy fantastic views and take in the scenery stretching 10 kms in most directions.

The Trans Pennine Trail

A long-distance path running from coast to coast across Northern England. The Penistone Line runs next to the trail at several stations. Popular with walkers, cyclists, horse riders, and nature lovers. Find out more about The Trans Pennine Trail.

Elsecar Heritage Centre

Just a short walk from Elsecar station, find the heritage centre run by Barnsley Museums. The New Yard workshops are a busy home for dozens of independent shops, artists and maker studios, tasty cafes, a beer tap, a vast antiques centre, space for events and much-loved festivals. With a dedicated play centre for little ones too, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Nearby find Elsecar Park with lake and bandstand, and route access to the Trans Pennine Trail. The Penistone Line Trail

The 16 individual trails from Sheffield to Huddersfield run between all 17 of the Stations on the Penistone Line. Covering immensely varied landscapes from inner urban to woods and farmland, crossing with many ancient footpaths, causeys, packhorse trails, canal towpaths, and disused railways. Take the train for a walk
