What is a Veterans Railcard?

A Veterans Railcard is a discount card that gives UK Veterans 1/3 off Standard and First Class Anytime, Off-Peak, and Advance train tickets. It’s our way of saying thank you for your service.

The discount isn't just for you. A named companion travelling with you also gets 1/3 off their fare, and up to four children travelling with you get a huge 60% discount on their tickets. It’s perfect for family days out or weekends away.

How to Get Your Veterans Railcard

Getting your Railcard is simple. You can apply for a one-year or a three-year card, either as a physical card or a digital one on your phone.

  • Check your eligibility: You must have served for at least one day in HM Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve). Merchant Mariners who have seen duty on legally defined military operations are also eligible.
  • Gather your proof: You'll need evidence of your service, such as a military ID, a letter about your armed forces pension, or proof of an award under the War Pension Scheme.
  • Apply online: Complete the application form, upload a passport-style photo and your proof of eligibility, and make the payment. It's quick and easy.

Veteran Railcard FAQs

Anyone who has served for at least one day in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve) or Merchant Mariners who have seen duty on legally defined military operations is eligible for the Veterans Railcard.

  • Buying tickets online - Simply select the Veterans Railcard option from the railcards dropdown.
  • Using the ticket machine - Once you’ve chosen your route, select the Veterans Railcard button.
  • In the ticket office - Show your Veterans Railcard when buying your ticket.

A one-year Veterans Railcard costs £35. For even better value, you can buy a three-year Railcard for just £80, saving you £25.

The Railcard holder will be entitled to 34% discount - the named companion when travelling with the card holder will also obtain a 34% discount (can not travel alone). Up to 4 children can travel with the card holder and obtain a 60% discount.

You can buy one-year and three year railcards online or by post – as a digital or physical railcard.
