How to Use Your 16 17 Railcard
Once you have your railcard, using it is simple:
- Buying Tickets Online: Choose “16 17 Railcard” in the discount dropdown
- Ticket Machines: Select the railcard option after choosing your journey
- At the Ticket Office: Show your card before purchasing
- Onboard: Always carry your railcard (digital or paper - or you’ll be charged the full fare).
The card works at any time of day, with no restrictions before 10 am, making it ideal for both travel and regular commuting.
How Long the 16-17 Railcard Lasts
The 16-17 Railcard is not available as a 3-year railcard, but it offers excellent value during a key time in your life. It’s a one-time purchase for £35, valid from the date of issue until the day before your 18th birthday.
So, while there isn’t a 3-year version of the 16-17 Railcard, if you buy it at age 16, you’ll get nearly two full years of 50% off rail travel.
What Happens After You Turn 18?
Once you turn 18, you’ll be eligible for the 16-25 Railcard, which offers 1/3 off most train fares and comes in both:
- 1-year version (£35)
- 3-year version (£80) – ideal if you're heading to university or starting work and still travelling regularly by train
So while there’s no 3-year 16-17 Railcard, you can transition to the 16-25 Railcard for continued savings after your 18th birthday.
