Wreaths of Remembrance

In 2021 we collaborated with our Community Rail Partnerships, the Investigate Learning team from Lincolnshire County Council and Curiosity Arts to create purple poppy wreaths with pupils from schools across Lincolnshire.

These were displayed at several of our stations, to commemorate the animals that fell in the war. The pupils learnt about Billy the Pigeon who received the Dickins award for delivering a message from a force-landed bomber, whilst in a state of complete collapse and under exceptionally bad weather conditions, while serving in the RAF in 1942.

We made all the purple poppy wreaths at the International Bomber Centre in Lincoln, and the pupils had a guided tour of the facility as part of the project. We then took wreaths from all the schools to our service in Nottingham by train.
