£750,000 investment into lifts at Derby station means changes for passengers

Tuesday, 18 August 2020

Passengers who require step-free access at Derby railway station will need to use the site’s subway next month while major work is carried out on the lifts.

The project, which is being funded and carried out by Network Rail, will see the lifts at both the main entrance and the Pride Park entrance renewed. It will be done in two phases to make sure they are not out of action at the same time – and reduce the impact on passengers.

The main entrance lifts will be refurbished first, with work running from Tuesday, 1 September until the end of November. The work on the Pride Park entrance lifts will follow, from Monday, 4 January to the beginning of April. Lifts will be unavailable while work is carried out.

Signs will be up around the station directing passengers while the work takes place and more staff will be on hand to provide advice.

Gary Walsh, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Midlands Route, said: “We know how annoying it is when lifts break down – so we’re carrying out this work to make them much more reliable.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience, but this work is vital to make the station better for the future.”

Measures being put in place to support passengers while the work is carried out will include free taxis to take people to the main entrance from the Pride Park side of the station.

Neil Grabham, Customer Services Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “We have been working hard to put in place measures to help passengers navigate our station while this essential work takes place. These include more staff on hand to help, lots of clear signage and free taxis round from the Pride Park entrance.

“Even so, we would recommend that all passengers leave extra time to make journeys and to check our website for updates. We’d like to thank station users for their patience whilst this work takes place."

Richard Morris, Regional Director East Midlands & East Anglia, CrossCountry, said: “Derby station is a significant interchange hub for CrossCountry and we are delighted to be working with our partners at East Midlands Railway and Network Rail to deliver improved access to and around the station for all our customers.”
