EMR to reinstate range of regional services starting next month

Wednesday, 27 September 2023

• 22 regional services to be reinstated in two phases
• Important step forward to help support customers across the East Midlands
• EMR will be operating 87 more regional services compared to the final pre-Covid timetable

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is to reinstate 22 regional services to improve the level of service for customers across the region.

The timetable increase will be delivered in two stages, with the majority of services being reinstated from Monday 13th December. A second and slightly smaller increase will then be delivered from Monday 3rd January, as customers return to work and education.

As a result, from 3rd January EMR will be operating 486 trains per day - 87 more than operated in the timetable which was in place in the final pre-Covid timetable.

This includes an increase of EMR’s Liverpool to Norwich services as well as further reinstatements between Crewe and Newark Castle, Nottingham and Worksop and Leicester and Cleethorpes routes.

EMR has aimed to prioritise those services which have been the most frequent requests from customers and stakeholders, while also protecting costs to taxpayers and ensuring the advertised timetable is robust and reliable.

To help these service reinstatements, a small number of changes will be made on the Nottingham to Skegness route during the Winter period to reflect the reduced passenger demand.

These changes will remain under review and arrangements will be made to either reinstate or supplement through strengthening during anticipated periods of strong passenger demand. EMR intends to reintroduce these services in the May timetable to cater for the expected stronger demand.

Paul Barnfield, Operations Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “In recent months, a dedicated team has been working hard to improve the reliability and performance of our services to allow us to reinstate a number of our regional services.

“In doing so, we have aimed to prioritise services which have been the most requested by our customers and local stakeholders while also being careful to ensure our timetable is robust, reliable and as cost efficient to taxpayers as possible.

“These services will be reinstated in two stages either side of Christmas. This is an incremental and sensible approach to reinstating services at what is typically the quietest time of the year to travel. As such, I would ask customers to check their journeys between 13th December and 3rd January before setting off, by visiting www.eastmidlandsrailway.co.uk.”
